June 8, 2006 12:13 - Father's Day And Coed Baby Shower Games

Father's Day is right around the corner, and what about your ideas that give the new dad a big surprise?

For fun, someone told me that they polled some of the men in and around the office to get a better understanding of what men think of baby showers. Here are some choice responses:

Q: What do you think goes on at a baby shower?

- "Crazy stuff. Like eating poo, playing sadistic games, talking about diaper genies."

- "Girls goo goo gaa gaa over all the baby gifts, talk about their own babies if they have one, and if they don't, talk about what they would do if they did have their own. Guys just sit on the couch and drink beer."

- "I'm pretty sure girls get together and give gifts to the new momma...gifts for the baby, diaper bags, etc. The mom opens the gifts and says 'Oh, I love it!' and moves on to the next one. I think they eat cake and cookies there too..."

Goodness!

Well, they'll just have to force them to have a good time then, eh?

If you're looking for the web's coolest baby shower games, below is a special selection of games perfect for those couples showers, which are indeed growing in popularity.

June 14, 2006 15:57 - Baby Shower For Cats? Am I kidding?

Can you imagine that throw a baby shower for two cats?

Surely you don't but it is true.

However, you might be already familiar with these baby shower games that include a lot of animals to your Shower.

And here is the story of Connie Williams, 56, of Dickinson, who threw a baby shower for cats registered at store, in June 6th, for her friend Barbara Ulicki, who recently adopted two bundles of joy.

Take a look inside one of the bundles and you'll see whiskers and gray hair. That'll be Shasta, the 8-month-old.

Take a look at the other bundle and it might be empty. Tarah, at age 2, is still extremely shy and spends most of her time hiding in Ulicki's bathroom.

Williams, who has never thrown a baby shower, decided this would be a good one to throw for the two cats, but especially for their owner. Ulicki, 58, has done so much for the community, volunteering her time, Williams said.

"Barb has done so much," Williams said. "This is our way to give back (to her)."

The cats' owner was even "registered" at the local Wal-Mart. Instead of signing up Ulicki in the wedding shower or human-baby shower category, Williams signed Ulicki up in the general wish-list category. On her wish list were things such as kitty litter, cat toys and a special photo frame for her cats' photo.

Ulicki who has a part-time Dickinson Public Library job and is challenged by arthritis and degenerating disks in her back, has never married and needs a pet to keep her company. When she had to put her 16-year-old cat to sleep and started coming to an empty house, "it was terrible," Ulicki said.

"There's nobody else at home," she said.

So she pursued adopting a cat through Pet Projection Inc. in Dickinson, and ended up deciding on two cats so that when she wasn't home they would be company for each other.

She focused in on Shasta and Tarah, the timid one, who was listed as hard to place and needed a home away from children. Serendipitously, those two cats at their foster home had become friends and sleeping buddies and so finding a home that would take both delighted everyone concerned.

Shasta isn't timid. She's a retriever cat, chases a balls and brings them back to Ulicki for more. But Tarah had other ways to spend her time. For two weeks after the adoption, Tarah hid in a secluded spot in the bathroom, coming out at night to eat. But with Ulicki's help, she has progressed to rubbing against Ulicki's ankles and even sitting on her lap.

Timid Tarah nor Shasta took in Saturday's shower.

Williams' cat, Boody, a formerly homeless cat saved by Oreo's Rescue, another Dickinson animal rescue, slipped easily into the cat and co-hostess role.

"It was a wonderful experience," Williams said. "A good time was had by all."

The event started with a couple of tunes from the well-known "Jingle Cats" CD, classic songs "meowed" by real cats, to Boody's great curiosity.

Boody's bodacious nature, reaction to the cat music and his love of the curly ribbon on one of the gifts provided some of the afternoon's entertainment.

Ulicki not only got her wish list items, but some of the 11 guests also brought other gifts, such as cash to ease the financial burden of adoption fees and veterinarian costs.

The guests each got time to tell the other guests about their pets. They also listened to recitations of compiled cat poems by various authors and they recited fun cat-fact trivia that Williams had compiled.

A professionally made cake had Shasta's and Tarah's face on them. Guests took home gift mugs filled with animal crackers.

Ulicki was visibly touched by the event, Williams said.

"It was so much fun," Williams said.

June 25, 2006 16:25 - Let You Newborn Know You're Always Be Around Eletronically?

I've seen tons of baby shower gift ideas....but this gift is really one of a kind special.

The latest gift in baby-shower circles is the future, thanks to the a Web-based company called...

Electronictimecapsule.com.

Since David Ryan, who lives outside Ottawa, put up the website two months ago, dozens upon dozens of gift-givers have signed their soon-to-be-parents friends up for the modern version of digging a hole by a tree and burying a note in a tin for children to find.

It is also a hit with parents who need their children to know that, though they may not always be around in body, they will be electronically. Forever.

In an age when parents reserve domain names for children at birth, sending electronic time capsules may not be an odd idea. (My child has had an e-mail address since she was six months old.)

Electronictimecapsule.com allows parents to send text, voice messages, videos and photos to their offspring in the year 2045. Or whatever day in the future you like.

Ryan, who became a journal writer after becoming a father, knew that some of his subjects (his feelings after 9/11, baptism, his hard time adjusting to parenthood) would be inappropriate for a young child to read.

"They were deep feelings and very mature topics," he says. "Then, I was playing golf with a friend whose father had passed away. His father had a safe with important documents. All he said that mattered were the letters his father wrote. Then my parents showed me a photo of them in Africa in the seventies. I asked them to describe what was going on. They said, 'You'd have to parachute me back in time to remember.' "

Parents can update their children's e-mail addresses over time, and they will receive notifications of "unlocked time capsules."

"Even if you pass away unexpectedly, it will deliver your thoughts and feelings forever."

Eerie? Yeah. But, like baby video monitors, it takes advantage of parents' fears -- they won't be around forever, journals and photographs may be lost, and children will never know how much they meant to mom and dad.

"I have had some mothers who are sick who have signed up, because they know they aren't going to be around in five years. But I also know that there will be messages left for kids when they turn 17 or 18 saying, 'He's not really your father.' "

It costs $17 a year. Once a year, you can download your time capsules, too, so you don't have to worry about the company going bust.

It also allows the non-sentimental to open up. "There is a culture twist. I'm French. In our families, we say 'I love you' every five minutes," Ryan says. "But my English friends tell me their fathers never told them, 'I love you.' "
