Japanese Baby Shower to be Enjoyed by Couples

Hello, I need to throw a co-ed baby shower for a first time mom. We are still deciding on a theme, but we are thinking of a Japanese-themed shower. I see that you had some advice for a Chinese-themed shower, and was wondering if you had anything for a Japanese shower? I have a few ideas (origami crane centerpieces, Japanese traditions/fairy tales, etc.), but can’t get beyond that. I m not sure sushi is the way to go for food, even though it’s an obvious choice. Other themes we are thinking of are: baby books, garden party, or tea party. It’l l probably be at the mom-to-be’s house in August. Thanks! Any help appreciated!
Answer:You’ve got some great ideas. Rice is a staple in the Japanese diet. While you may not want to serve traditional sushi, you may consider food with the same look – dessert logs are a great idea, pinwheels which can be purchased frozen, and other wraps cut like sushi pieces make great “pick up” food at a party. If a sit down affair, miso soup, fried rice, and any kind of grilled meat is an excellent menu with “sushi” dessert. Consider decorating with paper lanterns, colorful fans, paper umbrellas, and large cut outs of Japanese words for baby, mama, and daddy. A Japanese tea ceremony is a possibility for a tea party. All your themes are great and the food and decorations can be tailored accordingly.
